Class Today 3/29

Hi All,
We will start class late today.  I’ll be in a review downstairs for an hour or two. You should all work on plans and sections and have specific questions about the direction you are taking.

Scheme Update

Well, I am trying to change my perception about the ribbon from an actual habitable space to a shell structure that houses other programmatic elements as plugins such as the indoor theater and the galleries. I am trying to slope it towards the park so I can create a pull back movement as I go up in the building. Use ribbons shell exterior as a passage to access the roof top terraces created by other block i.e. school and residential blocks. In addition, I moved the public cafe from the corner of the project to the center where it has direct access to out door space as well as the passage from broadway to the 5th ave with the outdoor theater running under it and the main theater is at the background (this creates a public center or plaza where visitors can utilize it as a beginning or ending points of their visit.

In progress:
- Figure out placement of galleries relative to performance spaces (Experience through circulation)
- Finalize circulation core locations (awaiting gallery placement)
- I have some ideas of structure, materials but need to finalize program placement to start digging in those areas.

Your presentations should be limited to 10 minutes so that we have ample time for comments and for you to reply. Get to the point quickly and talk about the proposal. The thesis ideas are important, but that’s not the focus of this critique. Your architectural proposal will be the focus of the day. Your thesis book should be available for the critics at the start of the review.

Art Start

http://art-start.org/programs/emerging-artists-in-residence/

The Emerging Artists-in-Residence Program (EAR) is a six-month residency for NYC youth emerging artists between the ages of 17-20 that have exhibited exceptional artistic talent but lack the resources and support to turn these talents into opportunities for their future. The EAR program provides residents with a rigorous schedule of coursework, project creation, networking, paid internships, showcase opportunities, a transportation stipend and career-counseling. Residents go on to use their creative talents and professionalism to become art students, performers, and above all, responsible young adults with a clear vision and a plan for their personal success.  Art Start has recently worked with three exceptional emerging artists in residence from June – December, 2012.
